The municipality of Sesimbra is in the southwest of the Setúbal Peninsula. It covers an area of 194.98 square kilometres and is part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. It is bounded in the north by the municipalities of Almada and Seixal, to the northeast by Barreiro, to the east by Setúbal and to the southwest by the Atlantic Ocean. Its coastline runs from the Lagoa de Albufeira to the Serra da Arrábida, offering a wide range of landscapes. Headed twenty minutes inland, northwest of Lisbon, elegantly poised on a mountain range endowed with castles and palaces, lies the quietly majestic Sintra. From the Moors to the monarchs, or poets such as Lord Byron to authors like Hans Christian Anderson, magical Sintra inspired many a nobleman over the centuries.
Sintra was made a UNESCO World Heritage site to protect its abundance of rare flora, being as rich in natural beauty as it is in romantic and eccentric architecture. Either side of the mystic town, other beautiful villages and Neolithic ruins, impressive beaches, vineyards and forests await, making the area hard to rival and the longer coastal drive a sight for sore eyes.
